Perahera is unique and has a very long history in this country. When we hear the word, “procession”, the image that comes to our minds is a group of people walking in a row carrying sacred objects, Images of deities, elephants and performing dances and various entertaining activities.

- BY DR. BORALESGAMUWE PEMARATANA THARA, VIHARADHIKARI

Several main processions are held in our country. The Kandy Esala Perehara is the foremost among them.

The founder of the Bellanwila Perahera was the Most Venerable Bellanwila Somaratana Thero. Under his leadership and guidance, the Perahera commenced in 1950 and its 75th anniversary falls this year. In 1916, Sri Somaratana Nayaka Thero was appointed the Head of the Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya. He had a profound understanding of our culture and cultural aspects.
