'Vital unpaid carers feel badly taken for granted by system'

RISING numbers of unpaid carers feel they need more support and recognition from the NHS, a major survey reveals.

Around 4.7 million people in England provide care to friends or loved ones who are older, disabled or living with chronic health conditions.

Although their efforts have an estimated economic value of £152billion per year, research suggests many feel undervalued and overlooked by the healthcare system.

Carers UK’s 2025 State of Caring survey of more than 10,x500 current and former carers discovered 51% need more support - compared to 42% two years ago.

Half want more recognition from the NHS, up from 42% in 2023.

A lack of consultation and engagement with carers was a key concern. Just 14% said they were asked about their ability and willingness to provide care when their loved one was discharged from hospital.
