Speed cameras on M25 cost drivers £25million

SPEED cameras on the M25 have caught a record number of motorists and raked in a potential £25million in fines over the last three years.

Last year, an average of more than 300 drivers were caught going over the limit every day on the nation’s busiest motorway.

Data from the five police forces who control the cameras on the orbital route around London show a total of 254,646 letters were sent to drivers in 36 months.

The majority managed to avoid picking up penalty points and opted for a speed awareness course, which typically cost drivers £100.

Others accepted the offence and were given penalty points and a £100 fine, while a smaller number were deemed to have broken the limit by so much they were summonsed to appear in court.
