Right-wing rebels told to back Rishi over Rwanda

Right-wing Conservatives have been told to “man up” and get behind the Prime Minister instead.

Divisions in the party will be laid bare this week when MPs vote on changes to the law to stop the flights being grounded by legal challenges.

Many of those on the Right insist the measures do not go far enough and warn the Tories will face voter anger if the latest attempt to send migrants to the African country fails. They have tabled a raft of changes to the Bill that will go before MPs on Tuesday and Wednesday. Some Right-wingers have threatened to vote to kill it off altogether if it is not toughened up.

But a furious senior Conservative urged his colleagues to fall into line.

He said: “Government is the art of the possible, not the art of perfection, and let’s win the ****ing election.”

And Michael Tomlinson, the Illegal Migration Minister, insisted Mr Sunak will do “whatever it takes to get these flights off the ground”.

He told the Sunday Express the new law will “end the merry-go-round of legal challenges that have frustrated the desire of the British people to stop the boats”.

But senior Tories warn the Bill is far from “watertight” and hope the Prime Minister will agree to make changes.
