THE nation collectively fell silent yesterday at By Jon Coates the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to mark Armistice Day.
Princess Anne, wearing her uniform as an Admiral in the Royal Navy, was at the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffs, for a sombre commemoration of those who gave their lives to protect our freedom.
After Last Post was sounded, the Princess Royal, 73, who proudly wore 10 medals, including the Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth, led a two-minute silence at 11am.
This was one of dozens of events held across Britain as people brought their everyday lives to a temporary halt as a mark of respect.
