Top court holds Governor’s action of sending 10 Bills to President as ‘erroneous in law’.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday (April 8, 2025) pronounced judgment on the long “silence” of Tamil Nadu Governor, spanning months and years, to the State’s Bills, culminating in his withholding assent and reference of at least 10 Bills to the President for consideration.
Noting that the trouble between the Tamil Nadu government and the Governor has been on for a while now, the Supreme Court Bench noted that if the House passes the Bill again and presents it to the Governor, the “governor shall not withhold assent”.
The Bench also prescribed a time frame of one to three months to decide on giving assent to the Bills. A Bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and Justice R. Mahadevan pronounced the verdict. Attorney General R. Venkataramani argued for the Union of India. Senior advocates AM Singhvi, Rakesh Dwivedi, P. Wilson and advocate Sabarish Subramanian appeared for the State of Tamil Nadu.
Why Stalin does not respect SC order on NEET?: BJP’s Tamilisai to DMK
On the Supreme Court’s verdict, BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan says, “I do not want to comment on the Supreme Court’s decision. I abide by the law.”
On Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin welcoming the verdict, she asks, “What about NEET? Supreme Court also gave verdict on NEET. The Chief Minister should answer that if he is respecting this decision, then why don’t you respect the decision on NEET?…”
Reacting to the ruling, Tamil Nadu Minister for Information Technology and Digital Service P.T.R. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, in his social media post, wrote: “Democracy still lingers in India……justice delayed, but not denied”.
