Swans spot-on as they edge out Pilgrims to book third round place

Zan Vipotnik's stunning second goal in as many outings appeared to set the hosts up for victory for the Swans, who made eight changes from the draw with Watford at the weekend.

But Plymouth responded just before the break as Brendan Wiredu headed home to restore parity, and despite chances at both ends, the contest was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout.

Former Swan Matthew Sorinola missed his spot kick to hand City the advantage in the shootout, with Melker Widell stepping up to score the decisive penalty.

Both sides had their chances during a lively start to what was a tightly-contested tie.

Widell was denied by Luca Ashby-Hammon after a fine Josh Tymon-inspired counter inside two minutes, before Bradley Ibrahim had an effort blocked by Casey at the other end.

Ashby-Hammond then got down to smother at the feet of Widell the contest continued to oscillate, before Josh Tymon scooped a shot narrowly over the bar.

Then came the best moment of the evening.
