RESIDENTS are paying tribute to those who have served their country following the launch of this year’s Poppy Appeal at Swansea Market yesterday.

- STAFF REPORTER

The venue was chosen for events to commemorate the start of the annual fundraiser which supports services for past and current members of the armed forces.

The Poppy Appeal, organised by the Royal British Legion, will be particularly poignant this year as it’s the 80th anniversary of VE Day and VJ Day.

Present at the launch was Lord Mayor of Swansea Cllr Cheryl Philpott, along with Swansea Council leader Cllr Rob Stewart, Cllr Wendy Lewis, the council's Armed Forces Champion, and a number of representatives from the Royal British Legion.

Among events planned for this year is a Swansea Remembers event in the city centre on November 11, as well as the solemnity of the Cenotaph commemorations on November 9 and 11.

There will be a city centre parade and a Service of Remembrance at Swansea Minster on November 9.

These will be in addition to many events being staged by veterans, their families and supporters in communities across Swansea.
