Jobs ‘nightmare’ for new nurses

South Wales Evening Post

FEARS over lack of jobs for resident doctors when patients are being forced to wait ever longer for treatment, comes at the same time as a shortage of jobs for newly qualified nurses in some parts of Wales.

Nurses about to qualify in Swansea, whose training was NHS funded, said there are no vacancies at their level within Swansea University Health Board and very few elsewhere in Wales.

They have also complained of having worked hundreds of hours of unpaid shifts for the NHS.

One nurse about to qualify in Swansea said he felt “betrayed and frauded”.

They are also concerned they may be forced to repay the tuition fees the NHS funded provided they get jobs in Wales within a certain time frame, which many fear they cannot meet because there are so few, or no, jobs in their area.

The nursing student said applicants were “sold” the training on the basis there were “plenty of jobs”.

“We were sold this training as a “no need to worry about jobs” training.
