JASON Hyatt hailed an exceptional display from his Aberavon side after they stunned Super Rygbi Cymru champions Newport 28-24 at the Talbot Athletic Ground.

‘The Wizards made the most of having the wind at their backs in the first half and took an 18-0 lead into the break.

Fly-half Keillan Cullen kicked a penalty either side of two tries for hooker Saul Hurley, with Cullen converting one.

Newport hit back straight after the restart through wing Fin Baker's try, with Jac Lloyd converting.

However, it wasn’t long before Aberavon were over again through Cullen, who converted his own score to make it 25-7.

A late tackle on Matt O’Brien saw Hurley sent to the sin-bin before Newport scored again just after the hour mark with Baker crossing in the corner for his second try - and his third in two games.

Man of the match Cullen slotted another penalty to make it 28-12 and take his personal haul to 18 points.

Late tries for Newport from Chay Foster-Smith, converted by Harrison James, and ex-Wizard Morgan Williams set up a tense finale, but Aberavon held out.

Newport had to settle for two bonus points and it’s now two defeats from two for the reigning champions.

“I thought it was a performance that everyone involved with the club could be proud of,’ said Aberavon head coach Hyatt.
