Constance still hitting high notes
Somerset Guardian
|May 08, 2025
A war-time pianist has celebrated her 104th birthday. Constance Pullom, who played the piano in an RAF band during World War Two, has celebrated her birthday at Ivybank House Care Home in Bath.
Constance was joined by family, friends and the caring team at Ivybank to mark the special day.
Born in Southampton in 1921, Constance was a talented student who won a scholarship to her local grammar school. Following the outbreak of war, Constance joined the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) where she worked in the accounts department. Twice she came top in the qualifying course.
She found some much-needed distraction and camaraderie by playing the piano in an RAF band and later she continued to support the war effort by working in a factory.
