The goalkeeping nightmare Chiefs have to sort out

Newly crowned Nedbank Cup winners, Kaizer Chiefs have a lot to do before the start of next season and high on their list is sorting out a goalkeeping department that has let the team down on quite a number of occasions in the last few campaigns.

Amakhosi are believed to be in the market for a new goalkeeper and will take their search beyond South African borders to ensure they have a reliable shot-stopper to help them challenge for titles consistently. Soccer Laduma looks into the matter.

What the Siya crew has been told...

With the season drawing nearer to an end, Kaizer Chiefs have already started planning for next term and the Siya crew understand a big priority will be sorting out the goalkeeping department.

Amakhosi have been renowned for having some of the best goalkeepers in the country in the past, notably Brian Baloyi, Rowen Fernandez, Emile Baron and Itumeleng Khune in the PSL era. The late Arthur Bartman also made his mark at the club, proving to be a suitable understudy whenever Khune was not available for selection during those years.

Amakhosi thought they had found their man when they acquired the services of Rwandan international Fiacre Ntwari from TS Galaxy before the start of this season, but he has not lived up to expectations. He lost his place to current number one Bruce Bvuma before the end of last year and has not been able to get back into the team since then.

Bvuma has made some costly errors for the club and has come under fire from some of the club's former players who believe he should be miles ahead, considering he has been in the first team for close to 10 years.

He was in goal during the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium before losing his place to Brandon Petersen in the Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates.

South Americans are very fragile

Last weekend we saw Orlando Pirates make history by becoming the first Carling Knockout champions to beat the All-Stars team, after both Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC failed to do so in the previous two seasons. Pirates were forced to play without several of their regulars as they are in camp in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's charges beat coach Manqoba Mngqithi's team 2-0 to be crowned champions, for the second time in a week. Congratulations to Bucs as they close the year on a high note.
