Could this be Rayners' biggest season?

The numbers never lie in football, and when it comes to Iqraam Rayners, they tell the story of a man on the brink of a career-defining campaign.
-
The 29-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns striker has spent the last three years quietly climbing into the upper echelons of South African football, producing three consecutive double-digit scoring seasons while adding consistency, resilience, and tactical maturity to his game. Yet for all his heroics in front of goal, Rayners remains a player caught in the shadows, overlooked when it came to last season's awards, where despite finishing as Sundowns' second-best player after Lucas Ribeiro Costa in terms of statistics, he failed to earn a single nomination. Now, with Costa gone to Spain's Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa, the stage has opened wide for the Strand-born forward to not only lead the line at Chloorkop, but also to stake his claim as the undisputed number one striker in the country. And if his blistering start to the 2025/26 campaign is anything to go by, Rayners seems ready to seize the moment. Six goals in eight matches across all competitions have already put him firmly in the spotlight, igniting the question: is this the season where Iqraam Rayners steps out of the shadows and into the role of Mamelodi Sundowns' main man?
The numbers game
Iqraam Rayners' rise to prominence is no overnight story. His talent was evident as far back as 2019 when he lit up the National First Division (now Motsepe Foundation Championship), scoring 19 goals to spearhead Stellenbosch FC's promotion to the topflight. At just 23 years old then, he was already attracting interest from top clubs, though his coach Steve Barker insisted he was going nowhere, praising his loyalty and commitment to the Cape Winelands side. That season's haul came on the back of 11 goals the year before, making him one of the most prolific strikers in South African football over consecutive campaigns and underlining that his current success is built on years of consistency and determination.

South Americans are very fragile
Last weekend we saw Orlando Pirates make history by becoming the first Carling Knockout champions to beat the All-Stars team, after both Magesi FC and Stellenbosch FC failed to do so in the previous two seasons. Pirates were forced to play without several of their regulars as they are in camp in preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations. Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's charges beat coach Manqoba Mngqithi's team 2-0 to be crowned champions, for the second time in a week. Congratulations to Bucs as they close the year on a high note.
