MP opposes plan for controversial digital ID scheme

A South Tyneside Labour MP is on a collision course with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, after rejecting his controversial plans for a national digital ID scheme.
Kate Osborne said the plan, announced by Mr Starmer yesterday, was likely to prove “ineffective” and would target the wrong people.
The Jarrow and Gateshead East MP revealed her opposition to a proposal aimed at tackling illegal immigration.
If passed by Parliament, it would be mandatory for anyone wishing to work in the UK to have a digital identity card.
In a statement, Ms Osborne said: “I cannot support plans for mandatory digital ID cards.
