The Magpies went into the game having picked up 10 points from their last four topflight matches but came up against a Black Cats side unbeaten at the Stadium of Light in the league this season.

A cagey game of few chances unfolded with Sunderland taking the lead before even registering a shot on target.

Moments into the second half, Nick Woltemade headed Nordi Mukiele's cross into his own net.

"It was not our finest game," Howe told Sky Sports. "The effort was there but the quality was not. It was a game of really few chances decided by a freak goal and we could not create the opening we wanted.
