The country's most and least affordable towns revealed in Zoopla survey

Britain's bargain hunt

Beaconsfield in Buckinghamshire has been named as one of the UK's least affordable towns

Shildon in County Durham has been identified in a study as Britain's most affordable town for working families to buy a home in 2025.

Zoopla said median average property values in the town equate to just over a year's average household earnings for a two-income household.

Known for its strong railway heritage, Shildon boasts the Locomotion museum and the town is located near Darlington, Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle. Home buyers in Shildon can typically expect to pay £73,900, Zoopla calculated.

In September this year, hundreds of steam enthusiasts lined the tracks to watch a newly restored replica of Locomotion No.1 reenact the birth of the railways 200 years ago.
