Sunderland Under-21s saw off Halifax Town 5-4 on penalties at the Shay Stadium to keep alive their National League Cup qualification hopes, after a 1-1 draw at full time.

Graeme Murty's Under-21s side made the journey knowing that only a victory would keep them in the hunt for progressing from Group D.
Halifax opened the scoring when Sean Tarima fired into the bottom corner after Sunderland failed to deal with a cross.
