Revived beer is a true cold one
Scottish Sunday Express
|December 14, 2025
A NEW beer has been created by a Scottish brewery using one of the world’s rarest and most valuable ales to celebrate 150 years since the legendary North Pole expedition it was originally created for.
Innis & Gunn 1875 Arctic Ale is a faithful recreation of the original beverage.
It was made by English beer company Allsopp’s in Staffordshire market town Burton upon Trent to sustain British sailors battling temperatures as low as -40C (-40F).
A 150-year-old bottle of the original ale was
bought by Innis & Gunn founder Dougal Gunn Sharp for £3,000 in 2015. It was opened at the Perth brewery this year and used to seed the new brew, giving the modern recreation a direct connection to the Victorian expedition as every glass contains a drop of the original ale.
