Your need to know guide to summer hair

Between sun, sea, and soaring temperatures, summer can be a minefield for hair health.

If that sounds familiar, don't panic - help is at hand. I caught up with multi award-winning hair stylist Melissa Timperley for her troubleshooting tips.

From chlorine damage to excess oil, here's how to tackle the season's most common hair issues - and keep your locks looking their best all summer long.

Chlorine damage (green tinge and dryness)

Chlorine strips the hair of its natural oils, leaving it dry, brittle, and in some cases - particularly for blondes - with an unwanted green tinge. To protect your hair before swimming, rinse it thoroughly with clean water.

Hair acts like a sponge, so saturating it beforehand makes it less likely to absorb chlorine. For added protection, apply a thick conditioning mask beforehand to act as a barrier.

Always wash your hair with a gentle shampoo after swimming in pools or the sea to remove chemical and salt buildup and prevent further damage.
