The number of claimants has spiralled from 6.9 million when Sir Keir and Rachel Reeves moved into Downing Street to eight million last month — more than the population of New York or Hong Kong.
Behind this figure are stories of hardship, disappointment, thwarted potential - and a bureaucracy which is too ready to write people off.
The surge in claimants stems from a massive 39% increase in people not required to work.
