Ex-England U20 man Rothwell targets Scotland caps as a Ger
RANGERS recruit Joe Rothwell is hoping Steve Clarke will make his international dreams come true by handing him a Scotland call-up.
The 30-year-old midfielder has swapped Bournemouth for a threeyear contract at Ibrox.
Rothwell spent six months on loan under recently-appointed Gers manager Russell Martin at Southampton in season 2023-24 as they won promotion from the Championship via the play-offs.
And his move north comes with the added benefit of putting him front and centre of national boss Clarke’s watchful gaze.
Manchester-born Rothwell came through the England age groups, winning caps up to Under-20 level.
But with a Scottish granny on his mum’s side, he’d have no hesitation in switching allegiance if the call came.
Rothwell said: “It is something I’ve always been keen to do. That wasn’t the reason I came here but hopefully, if it plays a part and gets me into the international set-up then I’ll be delighted with that.”
Rothwell’s six-year-old daughter Zeta was given the final say on her dad’s squad number.
But no deliberations were needed when the phonecall came from Martin offering a reunion.
It proved a fruitful relationship at Saints as they helped restore their top-flight status by beating Leeds United in the play-off final last year.
