THE SNP will land households with a £6billion tax bombshell if they want to push through plans to give every Scot £11,500 in benefits, even if they are not seeking employment.

- By David Walker

Every taxpayer in the country could face a £950 tax bill if the suggested plans are approved.

The astonishing idea known as the Minimum Income Guarantee formed part of the SNP's 2021 Holyrood manifesto. A report, commissioned by the Scottish Government at a cost of £1.3million - claims this could be achieved by increasing taxes and specifically targeting middle-class Scots.

This would allow those already on benefits to receive even more free money despite the already-generous social security system in Scotland.

Salaries

Critics have previously labelled the plan "bizarre and unaffordable". The proposals have been put forward by the Minimum Income Guarantee Group.

Among their ideas is the personal allowance for Scottish income tax lowered to £7,570 - a move which would come at a cost to the public of about £2.68bn.
