Martin unhappy despite Euro progress

- Andy Newport

RUSSELL MARTIN has warned his ragged Rangers side they can forget about the Champions League if they don’t raise standards quickly.

The Light Blues set up a £40million door-die playoff with Club Brugge for a place in the money-spinning league phase after edging past Viktoria Plzen 4-2 on aggregate.

But it was another drab display from the new-look Light Blues as they progressed despite a 2-1 defeat in Bohemia.

Gers allowed the Czech outfit to rack up 27 shots. And across the team’s opening six games of the new term, Jack Butland has already faced more than 100 attempts on his goal.

And Martin — who faces an injury sweat after Cyriel Dessers left the ground wearing an ankle brace — admits his team will come undone if they don’t cut out the sloppiness that gave Plzen hope at the Doosan Arena.

He said: “If we don’t show a bit more care and quality on the ball, I think we will struggle against anyone.

“I’m disappointed we lost and I’m disappointed with how many chances we gave up. I think so much of it comes from just being so loose with the ball.
