Transport Police said: “Five casualties have now been discharged from hospital and one remains in a life-threatening condition.

“This casualty is a member of LNER rail staff who was on the train at the time and tried to stop the attacker.

“Detectives have reviewed the CCTV from the train and it is clear his actions were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved many people’s lives.”

A 32-year-old British man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder remains in custody. The suspect is from Peterborough where he boarded the train, officers said.

A 35-year-old British man who was also detained at the scene was released with no further action. A knife was recovered by police at the scene, which they believe was not motivated by terrorism.

The London North Eastern Railway service left Doncaster at 6.25pm bound for King’s Cross.

It pulled out of Peterborough at 7.30pm but within seconds passengers heard a message over the Tannoy saying: “We are aware there is an incident. Keep yourselves safe.”
