Over-70s may face 'insulting' bills for driver eyesight test

MINISTERS were accused of “adding insult to injury” as it emerged that older motorists may have to pay for eye tests in order to keep driving.

The government sparked outrage after it announced that over-70s will need to pass regular vision checks to keep their licence, with campaigners accusing them of blaming older motorists for traffic accidents despite younger drivers being the main risk.

That anger grew last night when it emerged that over-70s may have to pick up the test bill. Over-60s are entitled to a free check but it is not thorough enough to prove a driver is safe, the Department for Transport claimed.
