I COUNT myself lucky to have enjoyed fairly happy, contented schooldays.

I went to Manchester High for Girls and on the whole it was a friendly, nonabrasive experience. The only jarring moment I can recall was the time I was peremptorily summoned to the headmistress's office after morning assembly.Glaring at me over pince-nez, she said another member of staff had observed me after school the previous afternoon “walking home in an insolent manner’.
