A MAN accused of murdering his girlfriend is said to have told a 999 call handler that he had "definitely killed" her by stabbing her "about 40 times", a court has heard.

- By James Mulholland

The alleged admission came after accused Aren Pearson's mother called for help. It is alleged she did so after her son told her he had killed Claire Leveque.

A jury at the High Court in Edinburgh yesterday was played a recording of a 48-minute 999 call.

Jurors heard that it was made from a house in Shetland where the accused was living at the time of the alleged murder.

During the conversation, Aren, 41, who is a Canadian, was heard speaking to the operator after taking the phone from his mother, Hazel Pearson, who has since died.

Drowned

The accused wept as the recording was played to the court.

In it, jurors heard him tell the operator: "Hello. Hi. My name is Aren Pearson.
