CHANNEL migrants held at a processing centre may be in line for millions of pounds in compensation.

- By Michael Knowles Home Affairs Editor

Nearly 200 people have lodged legal claims against the Home Office, which fears a "reputationally damaging" court battle.

The allegations include sexual assault, physical abuse and theft of personal property by guards.

Asylum seekers have also reported appalling conditions with outbreaks of diphtheria and scabies, plus forced separation of families and denial of medical aid at RAF Manston in Kent.

Migrants may be entitled to receive £500 for every 24 hours that they were unlawfully held there.

Damaging

Courts can give bigger payouts - the Home Office has refused to settle.
