GOLD has smashed through record highs in recent weeks as global investors panic over Donald Trump's latest tariff war, but savers should think carefully before pouring too much money into this traditional safe haven.

- By Harvey Jones

With markets in freefall and pension pots taking a hammering, many are ditching shares and piling into gold in a desper ate bid to protect their wealth.

The gold price hit a record high of $3,167 (£2,436) an ounce last week after rising 16% so far this year, on top of 27% growth in 2024.

Trump's trade tariffs are to blame as global stock markets plunge, wiping trillions off pensions and investments.
