Gill says coach not the one on a sticky wicket

SHUBMAN GILL branded the row over India head coach Gautam Gambhir being barred from inspecting The Oval pitch as “absolutely unnecessary”.

Gambhir took exception to head curator Lee Fortis objecting to him examining the greentop 48 hours before the final Test, saying: “You don’t tell us what to do, you're just a groundsman.”

India captain Gill has waded into the argument, adding: “For as long as I remember, there is no instruction to stay away from the wicket.

“As long as you are not wearing spikes or you're barefoot, I think you can look at the pitch closely.

“[ don’t know what happened exactly in terms of why the curator refused and as captain, I don’t understand what all the fuss was about.
