STEVEN GERRARD has serious reservations about the state of Rangers' squad and club chiefs would need to pull out all the stops to convince him to return as manager.

The man who guided the Light Blues to their last title in 2021 is the firm favourite among the fanbase to replace Russell Martin, who was sacked on Sunday night as supporter fury over the manager and his under-performing side reached boiling point.

Rattled Rangers top brass called an emergency board meeting yesterday as they kick off the hunt for Martin's successor. They also published an open letter to fans, confessing they "did not get this right".

A major issue for Gerrard over any potential return is the quality of the players at Ibrox.

Gers splurged more than £20million in a huge summer overhaul but few of the signings have looked up to scratch and the American owners may not be willing to sanction another costly recruitment drive in January.
