Never, probably. I’m a big believer that price and pleasure are not as closely linked as you might think. Big hikes in price can sometimes unlock fairly marginal gains in drinking enjoyment (although, psychologically, who’s to say that knowing you’re drinking something really expensive doesn’t automatically give your taste buds a boost?)Anyway, I digress. My typical price point hovers between £8 up to about £15. I tend not to spend much more that often (and, I know, I’m fortunate enough to get sent a lot of wine to try). But sometimes it’s OK to spend a bit more. And Christmas is without a doubt one of those occasions.

So here are five reds and a white that will hopefully give you the very best bang for your buck, whether you're enjoying Christmas Day with guests or sampling alone in glorious peace and quiet with some mince pies.
