England rugby's Captain Marvel

RICHARD Sharp was a rugby union fly-half who captained England to a Five Nations championship title in the freezing winter of 1963.

He will be best remembered for the incredible try against Scotland at Twickenham that secured the championship.

It was a particularly triumphant moment for Sharp, who, a year earlier, had suffered a horrific injury on the British And Irish Lions tour to South Africa. The South African player Mannetjies Roux hit him with a head-high tackle that broke Sharp's cheekbone and knocked him unconscious, forcing him to miss the first two Tests of the series, which the Lions lost 3-0.
