TNT takes over as Games broadcaster
THE BBC has lost yet another major sporting event after it was announced next summer’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will be shown on TNT.
It is yeta further blow for the broadcaster following its decision not to send staff to cover next year’s World Cup in the North America until the football tournament's latter stages.
Yesterday’s announcement means the Games will not be available on terrestrial TV after the BBC has provided free-to-air coverage of the past 18 events since the start in 1954.
The Commonwealth Games is classed a protected event under the Broadcasting Act.
Major events can be put into two categories, A and B with the former — such as the Olympics or the World Cup — guaranteeing live, free coverage, while the latter does not. This allows live coverage on subscription TV, as long as some secondary coverage is offered to free-to-air broadcasters.
