We craved the heatwave... and if the wonderful weather we've had lately has had you considering reaching for the self tanner, you won't be alone.

In fact, there's always a spike in searches for glow givers at this time of year.

If you're a seasoned pro when it comes to your at-home tan, well done, because getting it spot on every time can be tricky.

For everyone else, I'm here to help. I chatted to expert James Read, who was delighted to share his top tips...

THE TANNING COMMANDMENTS: DO

■Always exfoliate three to four days after you have tanned to ensure your tan fades evenly.

■Always tan in fine layers to help your tan last longer and ensure you don't miss bits.

■Make sure you don't put your bra on straight away otherwise you will get the white lines where the straps are.

THE TANNING COMMANDMENTS: DON'T

■Don't wash your hands straight after you have tanned otherwise you will have white hands and brown arms.

■Make sure you don't clean your teeth straight after you have tanned otherwise you will get a white top lip.
