If you are over 45, live in Philadelphia, and are part of the African American community, the name Donald Ducky Birts should ring a bell for you.
He has been a civil rights, social rights, and human rights activist since his early twenties and has been part of some of the pivotal civil rights activities that took place in Philadelphia in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and beyond. Never one to stay in the background and be quiet, Ducky Birts has consistently proven himself to be a strong leader in his own right.
Let me back up. Suppose someone asked me to tell them about Ducky Birts without going to his website or googling his name. In that case, I can tell you quite a few things about this African American King, who will be honored with a street in Philadelphia being named after him on Saturday, September 20, 2025.
“Ducky Birts was a force in the Civil Rights Movement, a trailblazer in business, and a tireless servant to North Philadelphia. His entrepreneurial spirit and lifelong commitment to justice and community uplift continue to inspire generations. This street dedication is a lasting reminder of his impact and the giant he is in our city,” shared Councilmember Jeffrey Young, Jr., who, along with community leaders, is behind making this honor a reality. 5th District Philadelphia City Councilmember Jeffery Young Jr. and community leaders will host a street renaming ceremony to honor Donald “Ducky” Birts, an entrepreneur, mentor, and longtime civic leader whose decades of service have shaped Philadelphia and Camden.
The program will include remarks from elected officials, clergy, and community leaders, culminating in the unveiling of the street sign in Mr. Birts’ honor. Ducky himself will deliver remarks following the dedication.
