India not dharamshala: SC tells Lankan refugee

The Supreme Court on Monday stated that India is not a “dharamshala” (public shelter) for foreign nationals, while hearing a plea filed by a Sri Lankan citizen and former LTTE member challenging his deportation after completing a prison sentence under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

A bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and K Vinod Chandran dismissed the plea against a Madras High Court order which reduced the petitioner’s sentence from 10 to seven years and directed his immediate deportation.
