Shock decision comes months after title triumph
NON-LEAGUE football club Widnes FC has withdrawn from the Northern Premier League (NPL) with immediate effect, just months after winning the league.
The decision comes just a week after the league’s annual general meeting, which ratified each division it governs in a shock move for the sport in Halton and Merseyside.
Michael Ellison guided the Whites to the Northern Premier League West title on the final day of the season in May, with Harry McGee's strike the difference against Trafford.
The triumph meant that they kept Hednesford Town at bay and earned promotion in the Premier Division, three from the Football League, for the first time in their history.
Widnes, who share their home pitch with Rugby league side Widnes Vikings at the 13,350-capacity DCBL Stadium, have a complete junior section that will be unaffected by the dramatic change from the first team.
