Residents plea: Let there be light!
Runcorn Weekly News
|November 20, 2025
ENSIONERS are scared to walk home as their street has been in darkness for 11 months.
Lynne Davies, 72, lives on Madeline McKenna Court, a cul-de-sac in Widnes.
Her bungalow and the other properties on the street are managed by Your Housing, while the Madeline McKenna Care Home, located on the same street, is run by Halton Council.
Lynne says the street lighting has been faulty since she moved there five years ago but things hit a new low in January when the street lights went out completely.
Lynne said this had led to residents falling over and injuring themselves as they try to get home in the dark.
‘A Halton Council spokesperson said contractors were due on site to address the problem. The council also apologised to the residents.
Explaining the situation, Lynne said: “The street lighting has never worked properly and since January we've had no proper street lights, just metal tubes with a great big round bulb on the top.
“There are lights that are on in the care home and there's two very small flood lights, but they don’t light up the cul-de-sac. The flood lights are only good for somebody parking immediately outside the care home. The rest of the cul-de-sac is just in darkness.”
