Landlords told to be ready as law details revealed

LANDLORDS have been told to 'begin preparing' as new details of the first measures to come into force under Awaab’s Law are set out.

- BY JOSEPH TIMAN

The legislation, which sets strict timeframes for social landlords to fix and repair health hazards, will come into force in October.

It follows a Manchester Evening News and Rochdale Observer campaign in memory of Awaab Ishak who died aged two due to mould at his home in Rochdale.

Nine days after his inquest, then-Housing Secretary Michael Gove visited Rochdale and said he would look at introducing the law.

Awaab's Law became an Act of Parliament in July 2023, but full details of the new rules were then subject to a public consultation.

Earlier this year, the government announced that Awaab's Law will come into force in three phases, starting in October of this year.

Deputy Prime Minister and Ashton-Under-Lyne MP Angela Rayner has now set out more details of the rules landlords must follow.
