TERRORISM: AFFECTED COUNTRIES

- NADIA KHAN nadia.khan@inl.co.za

ACCORDING to the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025, Pakistan ranked second and India was 14th among the affected countries.

The index, which was released by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), analysed the impact of terrorism in 163 countries. It provides information about trends and patterns of terrorism.

According to the index, this is the first time Pakistan has faced 1 000 terrorist attacks in a single year. Terror attacks in Pakistan have increased by 45%.

The Afghan affiliate Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has become the fastest growing terrorist group in Pakistan.

Willem Els, a senior training co-ordinator for the Institute for Security Studies, said terrorism and acts of terror were driven by several factors.

“These include marginalisation, poverty, lack of opportunities, poor governance and the inability of governments to deliver the political goods, and in doing so, breaking their social contract with the people; as well as religious and other ideologies.”

Els said it was common knowledge that terror funding was a real problem in South Africa.

“We are still on the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) greylist.”

The FATF is a global money-laundering and terrorist financing watchdog.
