Kidney transplant; a mother's gift of life
Polokwane Observer
|March 19, 2026
A mother's love and sacrifice have given an 11-year-old girl a second chance at life after she received a lifesaving kidney transplant from her mother.
Desiree Leopeng recently donated a kidney to her daughter, Ofentse, who was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2024.
Ofentse, the firstborn of Desiree and Daniel Leopeng, was born on February 2, 2015. Her mother told Polokwane Observer that the family's journey has been a testament to the power of faith, family and determination.
Desiree explained that Ofentse's health problems began when she was just three years old.
Initially, her symptoms were mistaken for tonsillitis, but further medical examination revealed malnutrition caused by swelling in her legs and stomach.
