China partnerships boost cash-strapped coffers of Perth UHI

More than £1million a year in vital funding is being generated by UHI Perth's partnerships with Chinese universities.

The figure was announced this week as a total of 363 UHI Perth students from three partner institutions across China graduated.

Last week UHI Perth management board interim chairperson Alistair Wylie said - as its principal Dr Margaret Cook resigned - that the institution is facing an extremely financially challenging situation, where rising costs are not matched by increases in funding.

Dr Cook's resignation had also followed wholly-owned UHI Perth subsidiary, the renowned Air Service Training, entering administration.

Mr Wylie however had insisted that management are “working hard to mitigate financial challenges and set a clear path for our sustainable future.”

Following the graduation ceremonies it was pointed out that UHI Perth now generates over £1m annually in supplementary income from its Chinese partnerships.
