Deadly double sets up a last-16 clash with Hearts
Killian Phillips was at the double yesterday to send St Mirren into the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup as Group D winners.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder's first-half brace had the Buddies cruising.
But Ayr threatened a SMISA Stadium comeback in the final third of the game when Kevin Holt struck.
There were some anxious moments for the Paisley outfit but they held on for a third straight win which sets up a visit from Hearts on the weekend of August 16.
Saints gaffer Stephen Robinson made four changes to the team that thrashed Annan Athletic 8-2 last weekend.
Shamal George was handed a quickfire debut between the sticks with Ryan Mullen dropping to the bench.
Jayden Richardson, Declan John and Roland Idowu were also given starting roles in place of Scott Tanser, Conor McMenamin and Jonah Ayunga.
