Opposition to school crossing axe

BY RENFREWSHIRE COUNCIL LABOUR GROUP LEADER IAIN MCMILLAN
It is a very busy time at the moment for councillors as the eight-week cycle that we work to reaches its conclusion with the full council meeting next Thursday.
As opposition members, we don't find out what's on the agenda until a week before the meeting is held.
However, we do get notification of the motions that have been tabled by councillors. Some are relevant to council business and oflocal concern, others look at national and worldwide issues.
Three motions tabled are on the same subject - that of the removal of school crossing patrols.
Several are to be removed at the suggestion of officers and agreed by the SNP administration. However, as well as the proposed removals, another thing that is causing concern is that the removals are subject to decisions made by officers.
Now some issues are better decided by officials but the removal of school crossing patrols is not one of them.
Two of the motions suggest that this policy be reversed. I hope the administration see sense and accept these proposals and councillors can make the decisions on this.
