Council praised for managing budgets despite challenges

A watchdog has commended Renfrewshire Council for its sound financial management but warned increasing demands will tighten the purse strings.
The Accounts Commission said the local authority has handled budgets “prudently” and “worked hard” to deal with “fluctuating funding settlements” in its latest report.
However, it has sounded the alarm over pressures facing areas such as health and social care, the responsibility of the integration joint board (IJB), and issues affecting the capital programme.
On top of this, the council was applauded for its commitment to leadership and “creating a positive working culture” across services as well as progress made in addressing actions from previous reports relating to school accommodation in Dargavel Village.
Andrew Burns, a member of the Accounts Commission, said: “Renfrewshire Council has managed its budget with prudence and planning.
