Connections projects are 'critical' in tackling loneliness

Tackling loneliness is “critical” for Renfrewshire’s Winter Connections programme as a councillor stresses the value of “companionship” in the colder months.

- JACK THOMSON, LOCAL DEMOCRACY REPORTER

Councillor Graeme Clark, Labour representative for Paisley Northeast and Ralston, hopes the initiative - a network of spaces where people can connect with others - will continue to combat social isolation in the area.

It comes after the £75,000 fund opened for its fourth year, meaning community groups and voluntary organisations can apply for grants of up to £2,000 to put on activities between now and March.

Projects should be able to offer warm drinks and food as temperatures begin to plummet but Councillor Clark, who is vice-chair of the Fairer Renfrewshire subcommittee, has emphasised a sense of togetherness is also key.

He said: “People are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis and that continues but I think the critical thing is loneliness.
