Reform county chief shrugs off protests
Ormskirk Advertiser
|May 29, 2025
THE Reform UK politician poised to be installed as the new leader of Lancashire County Council said a planned union protest ahead of the meeting at which he was due to officially take up the role was “a direct attack on the democratic will of the people”.
Stephen Atkinson was responding to the announcement of a planned demonstration by the Lancashire Association of Trades Union Councils (LATUC).
The group said it would gather outside County Hall on May 22, just as councillors met for the first time since Reform won control of the authority at the local elections earlier this month. LATUC said it wanted to “spell out...that we will not take any attack against minorities, trade unions or our communities lying down”.
It added that it is concerned the party will seek to mimic within local government in Lancashire the kind of cuts controversially imposed by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) as part of Donald Trump's administration in the United States.
