We are in shame: SC on Balanga fire

Three days after a minor girl was allegedly set afire by miscreants at Bayabara village under Balanga police station in Puri district, the Supreme Court Monday expressed grave concern over the rising crimes against women in states like Odisha.

"We are in shame and it is unfortunate that these incidents are still taking place," the apex court observed, seeking suggestions from all concerned on what steps could be taken to empower schoolgirls, homemakers, children in rural areas, who are vulnerable and voiceless

New Delhi, July 21: The Supreme Court Monday used "shame" and "unfortunate" to describe the incident wherein a 15-year-old girl of Balanga in Puri district was set on fire, while underscoring the need for providing safety net for women, especially those in rural areas.
