These are the kinds of comments teenage girls often encounter online—on social media, in group chats, or through anonymous messages. While some may view them as harmless teasing, they represent a serious form of appearance-related cyberbullying.
Research has shown that appearance-based cyberbullying is one of the most common and damaging types of online abuse among young people. It affects not just emotions but also how teens, particularly girls, view themselves. A new study using brain imaging reveals that even viewing body-shaming content directed at others activates brain areas linked to emotional pain and social judgment.
